Growing up with horses you learn real quick what it means to have an “easy keeper”. Three years ago I bought my gelding Coal and quickly learned that he was not such.  He was underweight and still growing.

At one point in time he was on 6lbs of feed and a weight gainer. I didn’t think he would ever sustain his weight on his own. Many times I would try to take him off the weight gain and back his feed down, but nothing worked. 

One year ago this winter, I took him out to Jerry and Betsy Davis’s farm. Since he would have to be turned out with a herd of horses it was going to be hard to segregate areas for eating. Jerry told me to just let him try feeding Coal on just his roundbales for a few weeks and then we would play it by ear.  For the first time ever, Coal was FAT! This was the first time Coal sustained his weight without pounds of grain and expensive weight gainer.

Thank you to Jerry, and from now on Coal will only be a “Davis Hay” kind of horse!

We are very pleased with the quality of the hay you have delivered to us. The attention to detail, you showed me when visiting your operation was unmatched. Being a smaller pure breed cow/calf operation our cost per head is very critical to our success.

Blue River Cattle has lowered feed cost while increasing the number of head in our operation, since switching to feeding your hay. They are consistent quality bales. The quality is so good, we have almost zero loss due to waste, the cattle don't require additional supplemental feed to maintain a healthy body score.

I can't put a dollar amount on the time and labor we are saving, yet. But I rest assured, knowing we are saving money and raising a healthier, more powerful Angus cow for our customers in the future.
